A balcony overlooking the sea

A frame of Varigotti
The hike starts to the left of Strada Vecchia, an old mule track called Strada del Boriolo. The trail climbs up and, on your right, you immediately come across the beautifully renovated Castelletto (small castle) dating back to 1915, also known as Villa Terruzzi. The climb becomes now more challenging and it goes through the traditional olive-growing “fasce” (terraces sustained by drywalls, typically used in Ligurian agriculture) that overlook the picturesque town of Varigotti. Here you reach a barrier designed to inhibit bikers from using this trail due to its hydrogeological vulnerability and the historical value of its cobblestones.
Once you reach the Madonnina (within the erosive formation known as “Sciaccanegrette”), keep walking for about 50 meters until you get to a crossroad. Take a detour on your right and continue for about 200 meters up to a very gentle incline where you can appreciate by far the most scenic view point of the whole hike, hence the name “Balcone sul Mare” (a balcony overlooking the sea).
After about 600 meters, at the next crossroads, turn right. Go down a gentle incline that soon becomes rather steep as it has been carved out by the water and the constant passage of mountain bikers, so watch out! On your left the turn-off to the famous and extremely steep bike-only trail known as DH MAN.
Keep walking downhill and ignore the detour on your left that takes you to Capo Noli. On the other hand, the medieval church of San Lorenzo that you find after just a few meters on your left again, deserves a detour.
The hike is coming to an end. You will reach the mule track that merges on to Strada Vecchia. Another 300 metres you are back to the starting point.
