Visit to three archaeological sites: Fairies, Manie and Pian del Ciliegio
This excursion takes us on a plunge into the remote past, with a visit to three archaeological sites documenting human presence from 350,000 years ago. The trail starts in Verzi and for the first stretch follows the Via Iulia Augusta. Just before the first bridge, take the diversions to the right that leads into the forest and climbs rapidly up to the Grotta delle Fate, a large cave in which human remains of Neanderthal man, chipped stone tools and numerous cave bear remains have been found. We then continue along the path that continues to climb until we come to the asphalt road of the Manie, which we follow for a stretch in the direction of Noli. Shortly after a small deconsecrated church, now converted into a tavern, you take the fork on the left that descends to the crossroads located near the Church of S. Giacomo; here you continue to the left until you reach the Arma delle Manie, which can be visited via a small path that descends to the left. Inside the cave, you can see the archaeological area documenting human habitation between the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods and dry stone structures, wine and oil presses and agricultural tools. Back at the large clearing above the cave, we continue along the wide path that leads into the Ponci Valley. Not far from Arma delle Manie, take a diversion to the left that leads to the Riparo sotto roccia di Pian del Ciliegio. Here, Neolithic artefacts have been found and the site hosted a workshop for the production of pottery. After the visit, we return to the main path, reaching Ponte delle Voze, turn left and continue along the ancient Iulia Augusta road until we return to the starting point.
