Barbottina Beech Forest
- Status Open
- Area Melogno
One of the most beautiful beech forests in Liguria
If you want to get in touch with nature, spending an afternoon in the Barbottina beech wood is exactly what you are looking for! Being surrounded by beech trees is peaceful and deeply relaxing in every season: in spring you can watch as nature awakens from the cold winter months, in summer you can enjoy the shade and cooler air, in autumn the colourful leaves will mesmerize you ranging from yellow to orange to red, in winter you will find that the fairy tale atmosphere that haze and snow can bring, will leave you breathless. This trail is marked by the white and red AVML signs (Alta Via dei Monti Liguri) and it starts from behind the former “La Baita Restaurant”, where you can easily park your car. It is an easy, well-marked trail so that everyone can have a go at it.
The trail runs through the woods and, just before reaching the Barbottina State Forest gate, make sure you take a little detour on the former military road that takes you to the top of Bric Merizzo so that you can take in the magical scenery and check out the remains of the ancient Merizzo Fort.
Once you get through the gate, you are surrounded by beech trees that can be as high as 50 meters: the foliage is thick, the trunks smooth and slender, and the bark looks as if it was coated with a thin silver finish. As the trees thin out, the forest slowly turns into a meadow where it is not uncommon to see grazing cows. Here you can even find the Forestry office and a picnic area where you can have a bite to eat while you take it all in.
