Costalunga Trail
- Status Open
- Area Val Bormida
The Costalunga Trail is divided into three routes of 35 km, 17 km and 10 km.
Start out from Mallare, go up the historic centre and walk 700 metres along the provincial road; from here, turn right towards a small hamlet of houses and go uphill into the woods above the village. Climb up towards the "Bracco" locality and continue towards the first higher point where the "Ciansabella" and "i Serri" farmsteads are located.Once at the top, you descend towards Pallare, from here begins a long stretch that, on the right, affords a wonderful view of the hills towards Plodio; the path becomes narrow with fast ups and downs.
We pass other farmsteads in the "Martinazzo" area and arrive at the top of the Bresca pass, from where we descend for about 200 metres on the provincial road and then turn right and resume the dirt road in the "Ferriera" area, where there is a refreshment point.
You then climb up towards the "Galline" farmstead, along a dirt road with a rather steep off-road track, turn left to begin a very technical path with an uneven and damp surface that goes past the "Ghiane" farmstead and leads to the "Bric del Vento"; through a very fast singletrack, also used by MTBs, you reach the suggestive Santuario dell'Eremita. It is here that the 10km and 17km circuits end with the return to the village along the provincial road.
The 35km route continues instead with the ascent to "the cross", an uphill single track with a very even surface that at the top reserves a beautiful view of the sanctuary just crossed.
At the cross, another singletrack through the undergrowth, sometimes clean and sometimes very stony and damp, leads to the centuries-old "Faggi di Benevento" (Benevento Beeches) and a very fast descent along a singletrack for mountain bikes leads to Cadotto, and then back up along "Carbonera", the hardest climb of the trail.
From here, a falsopiano path leads to Colla di San Giacomo, the nerve centre of the Finalese and Mallarese outdoor scene, here the second refreshment point.
Here is the last hard climb to the 1000 m of Monte Alto, a path on a soft surface that reserves the most beautiful view at the top: on one side the sea with the Gallinara island, on the other the Alps with snow. One descends along the 'esplanade' of the methane pipeline to the 'Bocchetta' crossroads, an enchanting descent surrounded by ferns, yellow flowers and grass no longer than shins, which takes the runners along the 'Marturen' path to Bonetto with a last technical and stony section. We turn left onto a cart road, cross the river twice and run alongside it to tackle the last short climb along a narrow path with a clean, damp surface.
From here you reach the undergrowth of "Colla Bruna" and descend to the municipal sports field, crossing the pretty "Vignetta" farmstead with glimpses of deep woods where it is easy to see deer and wild boar. Return to the village.
Route details: For the 10 km, the start is always from the village, but first you enter a wooded area that runs to the left of the river, cross some fields, a short stretch of provincial road and the long, wide, fast dirt road that leads to the Ferriera (area of the first refreshment post), from there the remaining route is in common with the 17 km.
