From Ranzi to the ancient church of San Martino
A fairly long but relaxed walk, on a wide dirt road with some lovely scenic stretches, up to the ancient church of San Martino located in a grassy valley: ideal on a fine autumn or winter day. The hike starts immediately behind Ranzi, in a round open space with a panoramic viewpoint where you can find the characteristic wayside shrine known as "la cappelletta” (the chapel).Walking up the paved road, you will find Bui’s plateau where, in August, the town celebrates the Nostralino Wine Festival. Here starts the dirt road that you will stay on almost until the end of the trail. Follow the “red plus sign” signpost. Around you, a not particularly thick forest with oaks and some pine trees. As you walk up, you will also find holm oaks, hazelnut, and chestnut trees.
Once you reach “Colle delle Pere”, you get to the ridgeline: a strategic spot that was turned into the defence line during the Second World War. A little further on the ridge, historic mule tracks coming from Giustenice and Verzi di Loano. After a couple of hairpin bends and some scenic views of the sea, you cross the ridgeline one last time. The ridgeline will now be on your left.
At the barrier, you can take a detour that quickly takes you to panoramic hillock. You can see a monument and a little bell tower that were built with different colour local stones. Finally, you get to San Martino’s Church. This was believed to be among the earliest Paleochristian churches in this area (original layout dates back to the 8th century) and it was then modified in the Middle Ages and later on as well.
