Ponti romani in Val Ponci
- Status Open
- NR E
- Area Finalese
Discover one of the most captivating itineraries in the Finale area, which takes you through Val Ponci to witness the remains of no fewer than five Roman bridges set against an incredible natural backdrop.
Embark on an historical journey through ancient Roman landmarks such as bridges, caves, and quarries.
The trail begins in Verzi, just above Calvisio, and follows the ancient Via Iulia Augusta, a road constructed by Augustus in 13 BC to connect the Roman municipality of Vada Sabatia (Vado Ligure) with southern Gaul. As you travel up the valley, you will encounter five Roman bridges dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
You will encounter the well-preserved Ponte delle Fate as the first bridge, followed by Ponte Sordo, which has almost disappeared, and Ponte Muto, clearly visible with its round arch. After crossing Ponte Muto, take the left path at the crossroads to stay on the Roman road. This route will lead you to the Roman Quarries area, possibly utilized for the construction of the Roman road. Continuing on the main route, you will reach the partially buried fourth bridge, Ponte dell'Acqua. Heading further up the valley in the last stretch, you will arrive at the site where the last bridge, Ponte di Magnone, which has now disappeared, was located.
