Among the Rialto districts where only frogs dare
The name Rio Canterana recalls a distinctive trait of the town of Rialto, being a scattered type of settlement (it is in fact divided into districts). It is spread throughout natural areas such as woods where streams and rivers have a high-water flow even during droughts. The hike starts from the Calvi district, where you can park in the square of the same name. Walking on the paved road for a few meters, straight after the stream, take the uphill trail where you’ll find directions to “Cheirano”. Along this trail the woods are interspersed with cultivated land.
Once you reach Cheirano next to the San Bernardo Chapel, follow the provincial road for a short stretch and, right outside one of the houses where the road turns into a trail, turn right. The trail then goes straight down into the woods. Cross Rio Canterana on an ancient and impressive stone bridge, climb up on the opposite side heading towards Zenda district.
From here walk back down on a gentle mule track, then on a staircase which takes you straight to the Fugardi district. Once you cross the porch that takes you the district’s square, take the trail that steep goes down, partly on a small, paved road (careful not to slip if it’s wet) up to a crossroads: if you turn right now, you’ll end up in Piazza Calvi near Madonna della Consolazione Church.
