Between the Rialto districts towards the witches' bridge
Rialto, which means "stream that originates high up”, is a collective noun which includes several different districts scattered throughout the hills.Rio Pueri loop trail starts from Chiesa district, near San Pietro Parish Church, where you can find a nice rest and picnic area that comes alive during town festivals.
Leave the church behind you and follow a short stretch of the trail on your right. Once you get to the road below, take the steep downhill trail, cross the Provincial Road and a group of houses and you’ll end up on a mule track. Now turn left and cross Fugardi district with its San Giovanni Chapel.
After you come across a narrow paved road, take the trail that branches off to the right and runs through Piazza Vecchia. Here was where people once used to stack wood. The trail, which follows the old “via di mezzo” (the middle road), crosses several streams before getting to Taglieto district. From there climb back up, taking another narrow paved road and a mule track towards the Annunziata Chapel.
Now a lovely, partly paved trail takes you back to the parish church, through woods, fields, olive and chestnut groves. The “via di mezzo” and this last bit of the trail cross Rio Pueri on old little stone bridges. Legend has it that at night witches would wander around the river between the two bridges…
