Tecci trail
- Status Open
- Area Melogno
Once upon a time there were chestnut trees and sheep farming
“Tecci" are stone buildings that represent sort of a historical time capsule for the town of Rialto. Since the beginning of the 1900s, the core of the town’s economy was sheep farming, chestnut harvesting, woodworking, and charcoal production. The trail starts next to San Bernardo Chapel in the Cheirano area (signpost: inverted T). At the first crossroads climb up towards the houses in Piazza Alpina, then continue straight up to a further crossroads in the woods where you will be taking a left. Along this flat stretch of trail, you can sense how important this old municipal road used to be (look for a specific stone on the drywall, which carries the date 1887).
After crossing two streams, a short climb takes you to the switchback that climbs up from Piazza Alpina. Straight after, go back on the trail on your left that passes by some ruins and some recently restored tecci. The trail will quickly take you to Prato del Tecchio area, where it will merge once again with the dirt road. In autumn you can even see wild saffron blooming (protected species).
Back to your hike, a detour leads to Tecciu de Buggia to then cross the dirt road once again. Now you are about halfway up: the less seasoned hikers can go back by going down the dirt road, which skirts Tecciu di Voze.
For those who want to keep hiking, climb up until you reach a forest track, follow it for about 500 meters and then get back to the old track up to Rio Acqua della Ciliegia; the last 160m of elevation gain, up to the picnic area at Madonna della Neve Church, are on a dirt road.
