The magic of Finalborgo
- Status Open
- Area Finalese
Finalborgo is full of surprises. Thinking about its past, seat of the marquisate of Del Carretto, can put you in awe. Even from the outside, its mighty walls give off a feeling of a glorious past and a joyful present. Bars, restaurants, the traditional craft shops keepers of ancient trades, the outdoor sports stores scattered throughout alleys and squares, make it a lively and welcoming town. Bikers from all over the world cannot wait to come here, ride their favourite trails, jam-packed with history and nature, and share their passion for art and culture.
Here’s an idea for a tour of this beautiful old town that will uncover all the little gems this place has to offer. Charming hidden corners that can at times go unnoticed in a world that is moving at an increasingly rapid pace, even on holiday!SAINT CATHERINE’S CLOISTERS
They were built at the end of the 15th century, thanks to the work of Carlo Domenico Del Carretto, who became Cardinal of Finale in 1505. Framed by elegant columns with capitals made with the typical Finale stone, they are the perfect example of Renaissance architecture.
CHAPEL OF SAINT MARY OF THE OLIVERI
The cycle of frescoes in Saint Mary of the Oliveri’s chapel, in the right apsidal area of the Dominican church of Saint Catherine in Finalborgo, is one of the most relevant examples of medieval painting in Liguria.
THE COURTHOUSE
Known since the Middle Ages as the "palace where justice was administered", Palazzo del Tribunale (the courthouse) represents a beautiful example of "power architecture” and it is now home to a museum which hosts cultural events and theatrical performances.
AYCARDI THEATER
A sober curvilinear façade painted with trompe-l'oeil architecture on the square of the same name, hides the oldest 19th century theatre preserved in Liguria. A little gem showing a snippet of the thriving social and cultural life of those times.
BASILICA OF SAN BIAGIO
One of the most beautiful baroque churches of Western Liguria for its rich marbles and the art works preserved within its walls, like the original white marble pulpit and the balustrade with angels.
