The sea through the cork oaks
- Status Open
- Area Pietrese
From Ranzi around Bric Cinque Alberi
A small mountain peak overlooking the sea, still has what is left of a well-preserved cork forest accompanied by a phillyrea and strawberry tree, acidophilic Mediterranean scrub. The hike starts from Ranzi, Pietra Ligure hamlet, behind the little church of Santa Libera. The gently sloping path goes straight into the woods and crosses a stream to then continue on the opposite side to "Colletto di Ranzi", a crossroads of trails. Ignore the dirt tracks and head straight towards a small path that immediately goes into a thick forest. Look for a white and red signpost marked “Loa”.
Descending a little, the trail runs along the west side of Bric Cinque Alberi (5 trees), up to a crossroads: straight ahead you would get to Loano, but you want to turn left and walk up the south side of the hill, a short yet challenging and steep climb.
You come across several specimens of broad crown cork oaks, with their characteristic cork bark, which protects them from heat, cold and fire. In autumn and winter many of their big acorns fall on the ground. The view of the sea between their branches is stunning, even though the trial is unfortunately exposed to the noise of the nearby motorway.
Once you go over the top, start the descent zigzagging through the north side towards Ranzi, crossing Colletto once again and then following the first part of the route backwards.
