The variety of trees on the slopes of Ronco di Maglio
Large or small, rounded or pointed, with a smooth, sinuous, serrated or needle-like edge... how diverse can tree leaves be? This trail offers the opportunity to go on a "leaf hunt", looking for as many shapes as possible. With the coming of spring or autumn, it is possible to spot the various species of trees from far away: the beech, lightly coloured in spring and brighter in autumn, the chestnut, late to get its leaves that turn yellow early, the coniferous' reforestation, the scattered cherry trees with their white flowers or red leaves, and many others.
The trail starts from the town of Osiglia where the provincial road crosses Rio Osiglietta which originates the lake down in the valley; here take the road to Orticeti. The path crosses the not so busy road a few times. Then begin the forest tracks (main signpost: yellow inverted T) that take us into the realm of beech woods. Shortly after the trail gets steeper and it leads you to the top of Ronco di Maglio on its west slope to then descend on the south side (the less seasoned hikers can cut south- east and skip the summit).
Once you reach "Tecchio Vecchio" hill, head south and climb the ridge on the right to get to Bric della Croce: a steep descent leads to the arrival at Colla Baltera (rest stop). From here you can take a dirt track that goes straight down to Osiglia (estimate an additional 3km, about 1h).
