From Varigotti to Capo Noli along the Pellegrino trail
The hike from Varigotti to Capo Noli is particularly recommend in winter and spring. In summer, it still is a lovely hike, but it may become quite challenging due to the heat.The trail begins with a steep staircase and continues along an ancient mule track surrounded by partly abandoned olive groves. After 200 meters, the view opens up on to the Saracens bay. Take the detour to your right if you want to visit the medieval church of San Lorenzo and then can come back to the main trail. The main trail will be cut through by the passage of several mountain bikes. Climb up and, at the crossroads shortly after, keep right. You will come across an unusual building, built by the landowner himself, dedicated to his love for the sea. Giuseppe Cerisola nicknamed Beppin Carnera or the Australian.
We keep walking up the well-marked trail and we reach an altitude of 250 meters asl. An obvious track to the right leads to an extraordinary vantage point overlooking the sea. The hard climb is thoroughly rewarded: we are in the most striking viewpoint of the entire Riviera di Ponente. At your feet, the Malpasso with its stunning crag and beautiful beach.
Returning to the main path, keep right and you will soon reach the historical Torre delle Streghe, dating back to the 16th century, built by Noli to protect the borders with Varigotti. You then cross a wooded area and merge with a road accessible to vehicles that connects the "Semaforo area" with the Maine highland. We continue for a hundred meters and we are in Monte Capo di Noli (276 meters), the highest point of today's excursion and where the Carabinieri station is.
